Smart Search

Smart Search gives shoppers typo-tolerant product search, autocomplete, filters, and curated Smart Collections. Configure it in Dashboard → Smart Search, then add it to the storefront with the Smart Search bundle.

Smart Search must be included in your account's plan. If it is not, the Overview tab says so.

Drafts, validation, and publishing

Every change is made to a draft for one storefront. Choose the storefront at the top of the page; you cannot switch storefronts while the draft has unsaved changes.

  1. Edit settings on any tab.
  2. Select Validate to check the draft.
  3. Select Save draft.
  4. On Overview, select Publish changes to make the draft live.

Version history lists published revisions. Select Restore to roll back to an earlier version.

Overview

  • Enable Smart Search for the storefront.
  • Review Catalog coverage: how much of the active catalog is indexed.
  • Product metadata in search lists product fields that are eligible for search. Select Manage metadata fields and usage to change them.

Product metadata filters

A product field can become a storefront filter when it is enabled for Search and Expose to shoppers in Product fields and has Allow facets on. In Smart Search, publish the field and choose Show named filter (for text values) or Show numeric range filter (for numbers). Filters appear on the storefront after you publish. When a shopper applies several metadata filters, they must all match the same available variant.

Preview

Enter a query to see the top results the draft would return, with an explanation of which rules applied. Preview uses the draft, so you can check changes before publishing.

Merchandising

RuleUse
Synonym groupsTreat words as equivalent, such as sneakers and trainers.
Ignored wordsWords that should not affect matching.
RedirectsSend a query straight to a page. Match Exact or Starts with.
Pinned productsFix products at the top for a query.
Hidden productsRemove products from results for a query.
Boosts and demotionsRaise or lower products that match a condition, with a weight.

Rules can use product conditions, including a Metadata field condition, and can be Always active or Scheduled within a time zone.

Collections

Smart Collections are rule-based product listings with a URL slug and a default sort (Relevance, Newest, Popularity, or Price). Render them with the <upsurge-collection-grid> element. Collection campaigns apply merchandising to a collection.

AI Suggestions

Select Generate suggestions to get proposed synonyms and rules based on privacy-safe search data. Suggestions only use query groups seen in at least five sessions. Accept into draft adds a suggestion to your draft; it is not live until you publish. Dismiss removes it. Save the draft before generating suggestions. Suggestions are also refreshed automatically each night.

Analytics

The Analytics tab covers the last 30 days:

  • Searches, Click-through rate, and Zero-result rate;
  • Search-attributed orders — orders where the last product-matched search click happened in the same session;
  • P95 response time;
  • top queries, shown only when a query was used in at least five sessions.

Zero-result queries are a good source of synonyms and redirects. The Recover Zero-Result Searches workflow template can react to them automatically.

Index Health

Index Health shows catalog coverage and the number of eligible, indexed, pending, and failed product updates, plus the age of the oldest pending update. Pending updates usually clear after a product sync or field change finishes processing.
